Mighty Hurricane Katrina swept into New Orleans and into the life of a woman from
Minnesota. The widespread devastation on the news called Jenny to action and she found
herself traveling to New Orleans to help with the dire animal rescue situation in the
affected areas. In this highly readable book about Jenny's journey to the sweltering,
chaotic disaster zone, author Jenny Pavlovic details the daily physical and emotional
struggle of an animal rescue worker in the Lamar Dixon Expo Center in Gonzales,
Louisiana. While Jenny does describe in detail about the horrible situation, she does not
dwell on those details but rather plows ahead to the day she met the main character in
the memoir.
Bedraggled and bewildered, an elderly female Australian Cattle Dog caught the eye of a
very tired Jenny. The heat and the bedlam of the Lamar Dixon Expo Center were simply
too much for this old girl and Jenny began the almost impossible task of getting her to a
safe, air-conditioned place so she could rest and began to recuperate. Mounds of
paperwork and hours of waiting in lines to meet with no one frustrated Jenny but Kate's
situation drove Jenny to keep trying until she got her approval. Kate earned her name, 8
State Hurricane Kate, as Jenny drove Kate to her home in Minnesota crossing eight states.
The struggle to save Kate did not end when they left Louisiana behind. Jenny explores the
different tools of recovery with Kate as her medical issues are treated, her troubled mind
is reached through an animal communicator and her socialization skills begin with
obedience classes.
In this poignant tale of a single cattle dog we get the larger picture of the struggle of those
dedicated people who gave of their time, heart and soul to reach out to the animals
affected by Hurricane Katrina. Something so devastating became a positive force in the
life of one woman who discovered strength inside herself by rushing to the aid of hundreds
of homeless animals. Jenny's journey to aid the animals of New Orleans became another
important block in the foundation of a nationwide network of people who work together
to help animals in need. The pages of this book are not just full of a story but an amazing
collection of necessary information and resources for any pet owner in case of an
emergency and a comprehensive list of rescue agencies. Following Jenny on her journey
to New Orleans and back is an exploration of the ties between humans and animals, grief
and recovery, and the spiritual side of lending a hand to those in need.
